Our History

Brief History: In 1955, Ruby Smallman and Rossie Pierce embarked on a campaign. They advocated for supports and services for their children diagnosed with an intellectual disability be available within the community, rather than an institution. Despite the obstacles and frustrations, even prejudice, their dedication and vision have made historical impacts on the lives of Islanders diagnosed with an intellectual disability.

The PEI ACL has two booklets on our history:

  1. The Beating of the Drums
  2. Passing the Torch written by Wayne MacKinnon. This book is being used by Holland College Human Services as part of their curriculum.

Please contact the PEI ACL to obtain a copy of either book.
